The problem I have is that my mouse freezes/unfreezes
after you get a click from the computer. Sometimes
the screen and keyboard also freeze.

I have already defragged the harddrive partitions.

I'm running:

Windows 98
generic PS/2 Mouse (Trekker)
ASUS motherboard
PCI 128 soundcard
20 GB harddrive
CD Writer/Rewriter
Legacy Floppy Drive

20Gb drive, must be getting on, Sounds like it is dying!. Download
manufacturers diagnostic. Get a SMART monitor, try running HDTune, it reads
SMART status and also runs a benchmark. Should be about 38Mb/s, gradually
falling over time, occaisonal downwards spikes when Windows grabs control.
If it stays down for substantial period, is having read problems.

Did you recently install an anti-virus?
Install any other software that may be taking excessive
system resources?
I don't suspect the hard drive. Something is using
the resources.
Try an anti-virus/malware scan. Malwarebytes is
free. Avira antivir has a free version. Also maybe
clean up using ccleaner (also free).
