I can't boot my new pc with Win 98 cd-rom: do you now why?

I've tried virtual machines too(Virtual PC, VirtualBox and Vmware), but
there is no way I can boot Win98 on
this computer... :-(

I remember(some years ago) with the same disc and my old P3 pc I had no
problem to boot from cd-rom..
Why does it seem unbootable now?
I have to blame my mobo for that?(p5k pro)

Help!

98/SE/ME don't like too much memory or too much processor speed.
Could that be a problem?
Wouldn't do hyperthreading either

A startup line can limit memory to a lower size
There was a patch to get beyond 1 GHZ I think

What kind of error message did it give you?

Nothing at all, it's like there is no cd in the drive...
With virtual machines I receive a message meaning something like
"There is no bootable device in the drive"....but I can assure you
that's not the case :-(

However, thanks for the support.

Simple solution: boot from win98 floppy(maybe install one first),
then < format c:/u/s,
the copy the all directorys on the cd to c:,
remove floppy and cd,
then start c:\win98\setup.exe.
It installs easely from c:

Thanks, it works! :-)

I'm installing it now on a virtual machine....

It was strange though: the cd was bootable, and my system too(obviously)...

However, problem solved :-)

Why the need of a "vertual machine"? Can't win98se run
directly from "C:\windows" ?

My system is too new and there are no drivers for windows 98(for a
lot of devices, including the mothebord)

You can bypass the problem using a virtual machine.

Hi Max ..... Can you provide links to such 'virtual machine'
software?
In your experience, what's good?
Thanks.

So far I've tried Vmware, Virtual Box and Microsoft Virtual Pc.

They seem all equivalent, maybe the first more professional and with
more features.

Microsoft Virtual pc however can run only with Microsoft operating
systems, obviously :-)

its getting to be a problem...

i just has a venerable old P3 die on me this past month and it was a
dual boot with '98 on it...so the hunt is on for another mobo that can
run '98 without resorting to VM.....

Been experimenting with VB myself.
A few bugs to sort, such as screen res in win98 & drivers for printer ports
& like.
Down loaded Sun virtualbox, it was a free download that supports USB.

I think the problem is NTFS.
Win98 does not like it.
The OS you are on perhaps XP Or some other would be using NTFS.
I got around this by buying a cartridge (caddy) that allows you to replace
the HD easily, with each HD with it's preferred OS.
Win98 with fat32 & XP, Win7 in NTFS, works well.
