W98SE, 128 mb memory

I have been using AVG which is no longer supporting W98. I downloaded
AVAST and then found that I could not remove AVG. I turned AVG off and
then installed AVAST, but it is too much for my system. I uninstalled
AVAST and now need to know what to use with this system which only has
128 mb memory. Also, I see that others have had problems getting AVG
off their computers and the solution is to reinstall AVG and then
uninstall. I will need to get the installation file for that old
version of AVG if any such file still exists, I guess.

What do you mean by 'support'? No new virus files? I doubt that there
will be any new viruses written for an old, old OS.

Here's what I would do. Uninstall whatever you wish using one of the
following methods, in priority order: (1) the app's own uninstall file,
often found in its Program Files folder, sometimes available from
Start/Programs, (2) Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs, (3) manually.

If you are familiar with modifying the registry, remove all references
to the removed apps, OR use a registry cleaner.

Then, to determine your options for an AV, use ASK (great search engine)
where to find anti-virus for 98/98SE.

HTH. Good luck. Let us know the outcome.

Do yourself a favor and bring your memory up to 512 mb.

I have been using AVG which is no longer supporting W98.
1) Most malware (viruses, trojans, worms, etc) today will not run
properly on a win-98 system. The system vulnerabilities that
are leveraged by "drive-by" malware to infect a windows system
are found in NT-based OS's (like 2K, XP, Vista, etc) and not
win-9x/me.

2) If you use a NAT-router, a third-party HOSTS file, innoculate
your browsers using Spybot SD, periodically update your
JAVA JRE (and un-install all old JRE versions) then you're
going to close many vulnerabilities that your system might
have.

3) If you still want to run an AV program, then I suggest you
download (via torrent) a copy of NAV 2002 (Norton Anti Virus)
or Norton System Works 2002 (which includes NAV 2002). Then
obtain the Symantec Intelligent updater package to bring the
definition files up to date. An alternative to NAV 2002 is
Symantec Corporate Antivirus (version 9 or 10) which runs
on Win-98. If you can't find either one I could probably put
them up on a torrent if you want them.

I have Avast on Win98 SE with only 64mb memory on one machine and 128
on another. I see no problems with it.

Think about a linux for that era of computer like u-lite. The link is in
my signature file.

You can use clamwin antivirus, but it doesn't have a realtime scanner.
You just have to scan every file manually. It is not true that win 9x
isn't vulnerable to things as some people suggest. Because they don't
support it anymore virus people are targeting it. There are things you
can do to pretty much bullet proof it, like.

You can use clam, but
you have to set it to manually check each downloaded file. You can also
try and bullet proof your computer, by only using mozilla browsers with
the noscript addon. k-meleon and mozilla suite still support 98. Opera
also protects you from malicious javascript pretty good. Use anything
but outlook express for email, and usenet. Webmail or alternative
clients, are safer. Use policy editor, and set up administrative and
limited user accounts. When you go online you should only use a limited
user account. For things like installing programs you can use
administrative, or the runas dialogue in the right click. Limited User
accounts protect the computer from alot of malicious code, by denying
hackers full administrative privileges.

This stuff will block 90% of it. Beyond that use a linux made for older
computers like u-lite in my sig. It comes in a live cd so you can try it
and learn it before you install.

Linux may not be an option for the OP.

Also, "switch to Linux" is not the fix for every problem.

Take a look at Clamwin Free Antivirus (www.clamwin.com), it is open
source and free. Unfortunately it doesn’t have any proactive
features, but it is a good scanner with a high detection rate that is
updated often.
