Broadband Via Ethernet With Win98

Getting broadband this week for use on an XP laptop and hopefully Win98
desktop. The latter having great personal value.

I have installed the new Ethernet PCI card on the Win98 machine this had
Win98 drivers and installed OK with no problems in device manager.

The Win98 machine works fine but now lingers a few seconds longer on the
Windows "clouds" logo which I think may be whilst it attempts to detect an
Ethernet signal, would this be correct ?

I have not got the broadband line activated yet but when I do should I first
plug in the Ethernet cable, switch the router on, reboot computer and
(hopefully) start browsing after opening the browser window ?

If its not that simple with Win98 is there anything I should be looking at
in my settings so that I can avoid possible problems with the connection.

What is the win-98 system connected to?

A broadband modem, or a router (network hub) ?

The startup delay on the win-98 system is probably from the dhcp
service. You can eliminate it by hard-coding an IP address in the
network properties section.

What is performing the internet login? Is it the modem itself, the
router, or some custom software running on one of your PC's given to you
by your ISP?

The most efficient setup is to have your router perform the internet
login to your ISP, then turn on the NAT function of your modem or router
(if you have a router with several ethernet ports then you will already
have NAT running). Then hard-code the IP addresses of your PC's instead
of using DHCP, and then turn off your router's DHCP service.

I got the card from Maplins (UK) for £9.99 "Micronet" 10/100M Fast Ethernet
Adapter. The drivers supplied with it are on a floppy. Also see
