The only thing that 98 now lacks is decent USB support.
=====================Maximus Decim Native USB ver.3.3
http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/43605-maximus-decim-native-usb-drivers/
Native (without installation of additional drivers for each type)
support USB flash drives, digital photo and videocameras and other
similar devices.
Universal Stack USB 2.0 (without installation of additional drivers
for each chipsets) with uninstall.
1.Remove ALL drivers USB flash drives.
2.Remove ALL drivers USB 2.0 controllers.
3.Remove ALL unknown devices.
4.Install NUSB 3.3 and reboot.
5.After detection new USB 2.0 controllers (if it will occur) too it is
necessary to be reboot.

What's new?
Add CDVSD.VXD 4.90.3004
USBSTOR.INF 1.08 - add EKE USB Floppy (VID_0424&PID_0FDC)
add USBCompliance (for usbu2a.sys), small fix for USB FDD
=====================
I used to have trouble with videos in 98, until I found
"Media Player Classic".
MPC is low-budget. It works, but it's not the best multimedia player."Media Player Classic".
Get VideoLan.
But first install the KernelEx API compatibility layer:
=======================
KernelEx v 4.5 Final
http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/130936-kernelex-45-final/
KernelEx is an Open Source compatibility layer with an aim to allow
running Windows 2000/XP-only applications on Microsoft Windows 98 and
Microsoft Windows Millennium operating systems.
=======================
Before installing KernelEx, your system should have Microsoft Layer for
Unicode. Get it here:
======================
Microsoft layer for unicode:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/7/5/unicows.exe
=======================
After you install Microsoft unicode layer for win-98, download KernelEx
from here:
=====================
KernelEx Windows NT/2K/XP API compatibility layer for Windows 9x/ME:
http://iweb.dl.sourceforge.net/project/kernelex/KernelEx/4.5%20Final/KernelEx-4.5-Final.exe
=====================
After you've installed KernelEx, download the latest VideoLan from here:
=====================
VideoLan multimedia player:
http://iweb.dl.sourceforge.net/project/vlc/1.1.8/win32/vlc-1.1.8-win32.exe
=====================
Don't waste your time with the last "official" verison of VideoLan that
runs on win-98 (version 0.8.6).
After you've got VideoLan installed, you'll want to download dozens or
even hundreds of music CD's and DVD's and even Bluray movies - all for
free.
To do that, download Jdownloader from here:
===================
Jdownloader:
http://94.23.204.158/JDownloaderSetup.exe
Jdownloader will scan URL's that host files and archives that have been
uploaded to file-locker sites and will automatically arrange, order, and
download multipart files without you needed to mess around with the
file-locker website. Once you start using it, you'll find that you
simply can't live without it.
==================
Jdownloader requires JAVA - preferrably some varient of version 6.
Running JRE version 6 update 23 won't be a problem - because you've
installed KernelEx right? Of course you have. So here's where to get
JRE version 6 update 23:
=========================
Java version 6 update 23:
http://kojo.googlecode.com/files/jre-6u23-windows-i586.exe
Do not double-click that program to run it. Instead, go to Start, Run,
and enter this command:
jre-6u23-windows-i586.exe /s
You will be running it by invoking it using the /s (silent install)
command-line option. This is basically the only way to get it to
install itself on a win-98 system. You might have to add the
appropriate path to that line so you don't get a "file not found"
error. After it installs itself, the next step is this: Go to this
folder:
program files\Java\jre6\bin
and rename the directory called "nextgen-plugin-folder" to something
else (doesn't matter what you call it). The last step is this: Go to
your control panel, (start, settings, control panel), double-click on
Java, go to the Advanced tab, click on the (+) beside "Java Plug-in",
and remove the check in the "Enable the next-generation Java Plug-in"
box.
============================
So now you've got win-98 with
- KernelEx
- Java JRE 6 update 23
- VLC 1.1.8
- Jdownloader
So what to do now?
Well, start downloading free music and movies. From where you ask?
Well, you'll be downloading them from file-locker sites like rapidshare,
hotfile, fileserve, filesonic, and others. But that's not important.
What's important are the links to those files. And for that, you'll be
going here:
For music: http://avaxhome.ws/music
For movies: http://avaxhome.ws/video
For magazines: http://avaxhome.ws/magazines
Select the catagory you're interested in. For music, you can narrow it
down further by genre. Scroll through page after page of selections.
Once you find something you want, click on the "Details" link for that
selection. Read more about your selection, read the comments made by
others if you're so inclined. If you want to download it, copy the URL
from the address bar into your clipboard. If Jdownloader is running
(you started already, haven't you?) then it will grab the link from the
clipboard and process the URL for all the download links. It will then
wait for you to select which links you want (or just select all) and it
will begin to download them for you.
You've got unlimited internet bandwidth, right?
You've got at least a 3meg connection to the internet - right?
You've got a huge SATA hard drive (250 gb at least) - right?
For me on my win-98 system, I've got 750gb and 1.5 tb SATA drives
(formatted as FAT32), I've got a 6-meg internet connection, and I've got
unlimited bandwidth (no cap or overage charge). I download at least 10
gb a week of music and movies using avaxhome and jdownloader.
And I watch the movies and listen to the music using VLC.
And I copy the music and movies for others onto 8gb and 16gb USB thumb
drives using the Maximus Decim USB drivers.
Life is good with Windows 98.
