Installing generic printer

I am trying to install a inkjet printer just bought on a windows98se
sytem. Obviously the CD that came with the printer will not install
so I am trying to get it operating by installing it as a "generic"
printer. Problem is that PC keeps asking for the Windows98 CD to
install the generic printer. This system was Windows95 and then a
Windows98 upgrade was purchased. It does not like the Windows98
upgrade disk. Any ideas how I can install this printer?

Clarify "It doesn't like the Windows98 upgrade disk." by posting the
contents of the error pop up. Depending on the error message you might
be able to load the driver using a "Browse..." function to find the
driver on the CD. It might also be possible to copy the Windows 98
installation files from the CD to a folder on the computer's hard drive
and use "Browse..." to load the driver from there.

I found it convenient to copy the Windows 98 Upgrade CD contents to a
hard drive folder while running DOS (booted from a floppy or just
formatted hard drive partition) and install Windows 98 from the hard
drive. While I had to do a little hand editing to configure the boot
partition so I could access the CD (to copy its contents to the hard
drive) this had the quite convenient effect of aiming Windows to the
hard drive whenever I installed new hardware (like printers, the game
port and modems) instead of asking for the CD. There's probably a
registry edit that would accomplish the same effect.

I don't know if the more recent crop of laser printers still have HP
Laserjet II emulation. If your printer supports that it would give it
significantly more function than the generic text printer (may require
2MB RAM in the printer).

When it asked for the Windows98 CD I put the upgrade disk in and it
did not recognize it as a "Windows98" disk. Did not think about using
the browse the CD. Also your idea about copying it to hard drive
sounds like a good idea too. Thanks for you answer will let you know
what happens.

Do not know as when I try to run setup it says need a later version of
windows and stops
