Discussion:
Anyone have Opera 11 running on win-98 -> with Java working?

I'm running Windows 98se with KernelEx API enhancement, and I have Java
JRE 6 update 24 installed on my system. This is Opera 11.01 / build 1190
(Opera thinks I'm running Windows 2k).

Under Tools -> Quick Preferences -> Enable Plugins is checked.

Under Tools -> Advanced -> Plugins, I don't see anything specifically
saying "Java runtime 6 update 24", but I do see this:

============
Java Deployment Toolkit 6.0.270.7 - 6.0.270.7
Description: NPRuntime Script Plug-in Library for Java(TM) Deploy
C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins\npdeployJava1.dll
============

And the above item is enabled, and the file npdeployJava1.dll does exist
as indicated.

When I go to these web sites:
http://www.java.com/en/download/testjava.jsp
http://javatester.org/version.html

I get: "Something is wrong. Java is not working" and "Browser has java
disabled"

When I go to the Java app in the control panel, under the Advanced tab,
Default Java for browsers, I have a check in the "Mozilla family" box,
and no check in the "Microsoft Internet Explorer" box. Opera is not
listed here (should it be?).

I also have Firefox 2.0.0.20 and java functions correctly as expected
when viewing the above web-pages.

In the Java control panel, I DO NOT have "Enable next-generation Java
Plug-in" enabled (this option does not work under win-98). Does this
need to be enabled for Opera 11?

So basically, what do I need to do, what files should I copy or move
around, registry settings, etc, to get Java working properly in Opera
11.01?

Bonus question:

I've tried to have Opera update itself to what-ever is the current
version (11.5x or 11.6x I think) and it goes through the motions of
downloading some file, but in the end nothing seems to happen. Anyone
running Opera on Win-98 have something more recent than version 11.01?

What kind of a stupid klown are you?

First, you reply to a message and you don't even use a proper indent
character to indicate quoted material, and second you totally
misunderstood the question.

I don't give a rat's ass about Opera 10.x.

The question wasn't about Opera 10.x.

The question was about Opera 11 and Java.

Why does Opera 11.01 run completely fine on win-98 with KernelEx except
for this Java issue?

What files from the NT folder are needed for Java?

Why does Java 6 update 24 work fine with Firefox 2 - with no need for NT
folder?

If possible, try to figure out if it's files, or registry settings. It's
likely one, rather than both.

One way to do that is to use Dependency Walker on the running Opera process
(launched from in Dependency Walker itself). Try the same with Firefox, if
you have any chance there are two Java installs or updates ever having
occured. If Jave is running at all, and if all its dependencies match for
file version when invoked by either browser, it's either a registry setting
or a browser config problem.

Java, like Flash, will run as its own process even though launched with a
browser process. I found Flash to work in Opera 10.63 and FireFox 2, but it
was clearly the same process either way, with same behaviour. If you didn't
get to change settings, Java ought to be similar, so I'd start by looking for
evidence of different Java processes for each brower install. If you find
differences, it may be that KernelEx doesn't support each equally.

If I set the KernelEx compatibility level for Opera.exe to Windows
98/se, and then try running opera, I get this error:

============
Failed to load the Unicode compatibility layer OUniAnsi.DLL because: One
of the library files needed to run this application cannot be found.
============

If I set the KernelEx compatibility to XP/SP2, Opera doesn't seem to run
at all (and no error message or anything like that). So for some
strange reason, it will run if the compatibility is set to Windows
2000/SP4. Again this is Opera version 11.01 (Jan 26/2011).

And yes, as indicated by the screenshot provided by Hot Text, on a real
Win-2K system (I presume), Opera (version 11.51) craps out during
installation, giving an Error 1723.

I think that the version 11.01 I have is the result of one of those
nag-updates from version 10.x that I would have gotten during one
session where Opera says "A new version is available" so I said go ahead
and update yourself, and it brought me up to version 11.01 but
subsequent update attempts have not seemed to work (probably MSI
related).

I take it that relates to this?

If so, you might be SOL. It looks like it grabs the Opera installer, then the
MSI bit can't determine the state of Opera, so does nothing. Unless you can
find an MSI installer engine that works right with KernelEx, and also with
Opera's latest... As there are limits to what you can expect KernelEx to
support, it might be worth trying for manual installs (try a 'portable' Opera
variant) wherever possible so you get to see what goes where. Even where
KernelEx nominally supports something, it probably can't solve for every
function call, especially not if it's as specific as CheckIfOperaRuns or
IsOperaRunning, because they look like custom calls someone put in an MSI-
based package. I don't know how details of that works so I won't say anything
else.
