How do I recover data off old Zip drives?

I'm trying to restore some data I saved on 4 Zip drives. It's from an
old PC I'm going to retire that is getting very unreliable.

I thought I ran the Backup correctly and saved the data on the Zip
drives but maybe not.

When i run the Restore, the software keeps asking me to insert the
last disk from the backup. I must have lost it or copied over it
because every Zip disk I try does not work.

So....

Is there a way to at least get the date off the disks that I do
have???

The data is there and the disks are not corrupted. They read fine.
They just are the wrong disk #.

Thanks for your help.

What`s the file extension on the disks? .xxx ?
You may be able to recover some of your data.
If known.

If it was the old MS-Dos Backup that you used, you should keep in
mind that Restore was very picky with regard to Dos-versions.
So, is it possible that the backup was written under an older dos
version ?

Norton Ghost also does this .... :-)

Try running SETVER, if you know the DOS version used. If not, a clue
will be in the file dates. Try telling SETVER each DOS version from
that date back.

A similar possibility is that the backup was made by PC Tools or a
comparable utility and that all the discs are there but not in a
format recognised by the RESTORE maker and version. That will complicate
things greatly.

Then your backup is screwed. Restore placed the "index" to the backup at
the end on the final disk.

Only chance is to find something that can extract the data. That is the
easy part, Recreating the files is the really hard part.

the ugly part is ... even if you inserted the last disk of a backup the
damn message keeps comming up at times

Try to copy the content of every Disk into an empty folder and try to
restore from that folder
